The Wrong Backpack – historia en inglés B1

Sam noticed the problem only after he reached the library. The backpack on his shoulder felt normal, the same dark green as his, with the same worn corner near the zip. But when he opened it to take out his laptop, he found a sketchbook, a blue scarf, and a notebook covered with careful handwriting that was definitely not his.

His first reaction was panic. His own backpack contained his laptop, his student card, and the notes for a presentation at four o’clock. The second reaction was curiosity, which made him feel worse. The notebook was open to a page titled Things I am afraid to say in class. Sam closed it immediately, as if the page had looked back at him.

He tried to remember the café where he had stopped after lunch. Two green backpacks had been beside the same table. The owner of this one had probably taken his by mistake too. Sam called the café, but the barista was busy and could only say that no backpack had been left behind.

Inside the front pocket, Sam found a library receipt with a name: Maya Torres. He searched the university directory and sent a short message: I think we exchanged backpacks at the café. I have yours and I have not looked through it. I’m in the main library. He hesitated before sending the line about not looking. It sounded defensive, but it was true and important.

Maya arrived twenty minutes later carrying Sam’s backpack and looking as embarrassed as he felt. “I saw your presentation notes,” she admitted. “Only the first page. Sorry.” Sam laughed because the honesty made the situation less uncomfortable. They exchanged bags, checked that nothing was missing, and wished each other luck.

During his presentation, Sam was still nervous, but one sentence from Maya’s notebook stayed with him. He did not know what she was afraid to say in class, and he did not need to know. The wrong backpack had reminded him that other people carry private worries as ordinary-looking as his own.

Later, Sam realised that the most important part of the mistake had lasted only two seconds: the moment when he decided to close the notebook. Nobody would have known if he had read more. That was exactly why the decision mattered.
