The Train Ticket – historia en inglés B1

Jonas bought his train ticket the night before because he disliked making decisions in crowded places. The confirmation email was clear: Valencia, 10:42, platform to be announced. He saved the ticket on his phone, charged the battery, and felt unusually organised when he arrived at the station with twenty-five minutes to spare.

The problem began with the screens. Two trains to Valencia appeared almost together. One was a fast train at 10:42. The other, at 10:40, stopped in several towns and had a similar train number. Jonas looked at the list too quickly and walked toward platform six, following a group of passengers who were also carrying small suitcases.

At the barrier, the scanner made a flat, unfriendly sound. Jonas tried again. The same sound. A woman behind him sighed, and his face became warm. The member of staff looked at the ticket and said, “This is not your train. Yours leaves from platform nine, but it has not opened yet.” Jonas thanked him, stepped aside, and pretended to check his phone while he recovered from the embarrassment.

For a moment he blamed the station, the screens, and the people walking confidently in every direction. Then he noticed the detail he had ignored: the word direct beside his train. The 10:40 train was not direct. He had read the destination but not the service. The mistake was small, but it was enough to send him to the wrong platform.

On platform nine, Jonas asked a clearer question: “Is this the direct train to Valencia at 10:42?” The staff member nodded and pointed to carriage C. This time, Jonas checked the time, the destination, the word direct, and the carriage before boarding.

When the train left, he was still slightly embarrassed, but he also felt more prepared. Travel mistakes often look like bad luck, he thought, until you find the tiny piece of information you skipped.

After that trip, Jonas began taking screenshots of the complete ticket details instead of only the QR code. It was not because he had become nervous about every journey. It was because he had learned which details deserved attention before a station became crowded and his brain started following other people.
